So, surely some of you have seen PTZtv's latest tweets and comments regarding their stream of the Port Canaveral webcam and the SpaceX community (which is not limited to just us, but also NSF and the SpaceX Facebook Group). They're... concerning to say the least.
PTZtv instigated this during the CRS-8 recovery; where they accused a number of us of accessing their content through means that went beyond viewing their website, this included direct streaming links which one could simply open in VLC; and yes, that deprives them of ad revenue which is needed for them to fund their service. Understandably, this made PTZtv upset. So, we agreed to oblige and kindly asked everyone to support PTZtv by viewing through their direct site. We also removed a number of comments which discussed how to bypass their website. In short, we did as best of a job as we could to ensure PTZtv remained happy. It did.
Public sentiment towards PTZtv following this was positive. Many of us even stated we would happily subscribe to a premium service, or make a one off payment to support PTZtv and their Port Canaveral webcam operator.
While this is happening, NASASpaceflight members investigated the possibility of setting up their own camera. The idea came to an abrupt halt when someone received word Port Canaveral would likely not look upon the idea kindly due to "port security rules". Why then PTZtv is allowed to operate a camera here is beyond me.
For a time, PTZtv appeared to be positive and receptive to our response. However, for whatever reason, this appears to have changed recently. A member of this community created a website which collated a number of sources of information together to follow the JCSAT-14 recovery. This included a Twitter feed and a Google Maps embed among other things, but it crucially included an iframe embed of the Port Canaveral Webcam. This was a website created by a SpaceX fan who was acting in good faith. They were not happy with this, and the CEO of PTZtv took to the SpaceX Facebook Fan Group to make this post.
Not true. Let me clear up the rumor and set the record straight. Rocket Watch is over. This has absolutely nothing to do with the port getting annoyed with us or intervening in any way. It has everything to do with hackers circumventing our website, stealing our live feed and broadcasting it on http://spacex.yasiu.pl/ with total disregard for our copyright. We had the linked website's host shut them down yesterday, but the site surfaced again. The individual behind this may think this is a joke, but we have identified him and plan to take appropriate action.
This group [SpaceX Facebook Group] has my utmost respect and I have been following the discussions here. The fact that this is a controlled group with an "identifying" Facebook Page makes a big difference. In addition to the hacking attempts, our location host has been hounded by emails to replace our camera or add another. This is not an option and is referred to as tortious interference.
A few members of that group then decided to publicly identify (doxx) this person. A person, who in good faith (okay, and maybe with bit of short sightedness) went out of his way to create a cool place for others to learn about and watch SpaceX’s progress. They apparently consider what this person did, embedding an iframe, as “hacking”. Contained within their comment is also a falsehood. They state that there is no issue with Port Canaveral. I know for a fact they are currently discussing with Port Canaveral about what parts of the port they can film or not.
Meanwhile, while we as moderators still publicly supported viewing their ad-infested, poorly-built website, which redirected people to malware sites; they were going elsewhere disparaging this community and its members. This is unacceptable.
Furthermore, and apparently in response to our requests for a paid feed, they created PTZtv Premium, which allowed users to purchase a monthly subscription to PTZtv for $14. It however quickly became apparent all one needed to do was to delete a single <div> element on that site, and one could receive "ad-free" access to their service, instead of paying a subscription free. A user on /r/SpaceX discovered this, and emailed PTZtv to notify them of this with a resolution on how to possibly fix. Here was PTZtv's stellar response.
Hello <<name>>,
Thank you for the feedback.
The free-to-view and premium pages work just fine in Firefox ... unaltered, default install. Just tested again to confirm.
The only redirect happens if we detect some of our content (like ads) has been removed or blocked. That redirect does not go to the Premium service, it goes to the page that explains the premium service on our company website : http://www.ptztv.com/premium/
Rationale being ... if you don't want ads then okay, pay us directly instead. Our live streaming video doesn't happen because a magic fairy descended from the heavens and gifted it to the world. Real people work longs hours, 7 days a week and invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in the service. That investment has to be covered.
Using Firefox in "private window" mode will force the redirect too, no ad blocker present. Why... because Firefox now does tracking protection in that mode and effectively does the same as ad blocking. There are probably many other Firefox add-ons that do similar things.
If you just run your Firefox browser in an unaltered state that allows advertising ... you can watch just fine.
Is it possible to hack our Premium service? Sure it is ... most things are hackable. Organizations with billions of dollars in resources are hacked. We don't have that kind of time or energy to prevent the toxic SpaceX fan community from persistently looking for ways to bypass our sites.
Ironically, we quickly produced the Premium service with a trivial paywall because of begging from that same community for a means to "compensate us". The reality has been a small number of viewers have honored that intent but a large number are still hell-bent on hacking. We only see this depressing and illegal behavior when there is a SpaceX event at Port Canaveral. We can and will and do take action against people who breach our Terms & Conditions of Use.
The gross sense of entitlement to "free content" and blatant disregard for the law (or basic Economics 101) is a sad testament to those individuals concerned.
Best regards,
Emphasis mine. Despite our best efforts, they label us as toxic, and apparently the people that paid were merely "begging". That's what PTZtv thinks of their premium subscribers. It's reprehensible.
Because of a culmination of all of the above, they have decided to stop streaming footage of F9-024. This, 2 days after launching their Premium service that they specifically advertised to SpaceX fans, and is apparently non-refundable (however some have reported receiving refunds).
This goes beyond just fans though. They’ve accused SpaceX employees of accessing their feeds “illegally” too. Their accusatory stance of SpaceX fans, SpaceX employees, and their tweets: “to protect our system's integrity, have to distance ourselves from the juvenile, toxic & criminal element that follows SpaceX”, are laughable and ludicrous, and will not be tolerated. I have never seen such poor professionalism from a commercial entity before. One would think they would love to have extra visibility, instead, they’ve thrown the baby out with the bathwater.
Their attitude is nothing but disrespectful. Their overbearing, reactionary, and negative behavior has become increasingly detrimental over this recovery attempt. It’s become an annoying distraction for us to deal with as moderators, and we won't continue to indulge their wishes any longer.

As of now, all links on this subreddit to the Port Canaveral Webcam will be removed.

They no longer deserve the publicity, and we won’t be providing it. That being said we also won’t tolerate hostility towards PTZtv, unlike them we can be the bigger people here. Any non-constructive comments will be removed.
Additionally, pending a response to an email that I sent to Port Canaveral on whether setting up a camera is allowed,

we will be looking at crowdfunding our own camera separate of PTZtv.

It’s not “tortious interference”. It’s capitalism. We’re not happy with the services we are receiving from PTZtv, so we would like to create our own. On this note, I will keep you updated on the progress of this idea in this post.

Thank you Echo for the excellent summary of the issue. While I can see mistakes were made on our side, I feel that its best to cut ties with PTZtv as they are not behaving very professionally or respectful to those who have followed the rules and praised them for their work. I wish them luck in the future and look forward to a better solution for our community.

The root of the problem is PTZtv doesn't care about space, rockets, SpaceX or their viewers at all. You can see in their emails that they are entirely profit driven. /r/SpaceX is on the other hand entirely SpaceX driven. The awful ads shouldn't be an obstacle for a collaboration between us and them, but that would require a common interest. And they choose money instead of common sense.

Thanks /u/EchoLogic for this coherent write-up.
Went to bed yesterday and was wondering why the webcam was showing only the port entrance. Now I wake up to this.
Wow, this is... childish behavior from PTZtv, to say the least. Placing an iframe of their site (Which means that the ads still get loaded, afaik!) is regarded as hacking.
I was fine with their ad-fested website in the beginning, because it seemed to me that they were showing only Canaveral-related ads, but I noticed 3rd party ads (Since they were in German) a few days ago. Didn't see a malware-ad though, but the possibility is there, of course (and it seems as if it actually happened).
Let's do our own webcam, the cost of the system and maintenance won't be too high, most of it should be the legal clarifications regarding filming the port area.

That was my screenshot, it didn't happen until earlier today when it actually happened twice. Wasn't even in Chrome and I notice the stream disappear and the tab redirected to that page out of the blue. And of course it has that whole Microsoft Sam sounding voice telling me my computer is infected. Needless to say I didn't go back after the second time :P Also, I'm pretty protective of my computer so I'm positive it didn't come from somewhere else. Never seen something like that first hand until I was on their site.

Clicked on this link, wholly expecting a post about why we should all turn off adblock and click their malware. Instead had /u/EchoLogic telling it like it is.

Public opinion on what hacking is is a little silly. It doesn't help that media keep showing stock photos of linux terminals with "ls -ltr" commands. Judging from they way the website looks and it's setup it's clear they didn't do their homework :P

I wish to thank you for taking this action. PTZ is in my opinion not, never has been, and never will be a good thing for fans of spaceflight. And I would be happy to donate to a good effort to crowdsource a webcam.
Such a webcam should be set to stream to Youtube. There is absolutely NO need to waste money and effort on stream hosting services. A webcam hooked up to a cheapo desktop running OBS is all that is needed. (Well obviously one needs permission to set up the webcam from the property owner and this mess about restrictions should be cleared up.
Heck I am sure it could be done hooked up to a Raspberry Pi

Absolutely. We were thinking either YouTube, uStream, or a similar streaming service. Heck, the camera only needs to be operating for a few days every few weeks.

You could use multiple instances of OBS ("Open Broadcaster Software") to stream to multiple services but Youtube would work just fine. As most devices built these days that can handle internet streaming are made to run Youtube.

Here's a thought...
Youtube is owned by Google, who also have a significant stake in SpaceX
I would have thought a word in the right ear at Google would likely result in them setting up something, as it would promote SpaceX, Google, Youtube etc for very little investment.

[–]hallowatisdeze 6 points7 points8 points  (2 children)
I think the demand for such a stream is way too low for big companies like Google and YouTube to become interested
Don\'t downvote because you disagree!
[–]Scuffers 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
that's not the way to consider it, forget making money from it and consider the marketing exposure it gives them (specifically, SpaceX, but also Youtube/Google providing the service).
Elon is more than aware that the public perception of SpaceX/Tesla/etc. is critical to their future success, hence things like the 360 video of the landing, etc. that would have cost real money to produce, a port-based webstream is chicken-feed in comparison.
Who's got a Twitter account and wants to post Elon the idea?
Need to frame the request as being from an avid international group of followers/supporters trying to keep up with SpaceX's progress.

One thing though, how would you handle operating the camera? A fixed position would be less than ideal. Maybe a system where viewers can ask for camera control and point the camera towards the interesting location (within legal bounds)?

We're looking at one of the Axis-series of cameras which has pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ :P), HD recording and a few other bits of functionality. The goal would be to meet or exceed the current offering, while being realistic on price, installation, and operating costs. We have good estimates of price and logistics on our end, which I don't want to disclose just yet (putting the Falcon ahead of the droneship, as they say).
Really though, finding a camera isn't the difficult bit. Placements & Go-aheads are the troublesome parts. I've sent out some feelers, and I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks for all your efforts to get this off the ground - from the other side of the world no less! I am certainly willing to chip in when the crowdfunding goes live.
Do you have any trustworthy local people who can do the installation (and troubleshooting) of the webcam? (not that I can help with that, but once the approval & money is there, this is the next bottleneck)

Anyone that is not happy with their ptztv subscription is entitled to a refund. If a refund is not provided, you can ring your card issuer (assuming that you paid via credit card) and tell them the service as advertised is not being provided and the company refused (assuming they do) a refund.
Don\'t downvote because you disagree!
[–]mechakreidler 2 points3 points4 points  (2 children)
To be fair, they're technically still providing exactly what they advertised (scenic webcams). It was never directed to SpaceX fans, although it's obvious we're the ones he made it for. Still, worth a try I suppose.

Actually, the email above proves that they created the premium service for SpaceX fans:
Ironically, we quickly produced the Premium service with a trivial paywall because of begging from that same community for a means to "compensate us"
So it is quite clear that the expected and understood service includes the viewing of the rocket (the service does not have to be written down in terms and conditions for it to be expected).
Don\'t downvote because you disagree!
[–]mechakreidler 5 points6 points7 points  (0 children)
Even if it was created for SpaceX fans, that doesn't mean the service is 'providing a livestream of the rocket'. I guess it's getting a little pedantic now, but as far as what you're paying for, it's still just scenic views.
And in any case, that was a private email and has nothing to do with how the service is advertised.

Curses, and I paid with a debit card. I Paid $7 and told them that since I watched 1 day of rocket stuff they could keep the $1 they are entitled to but I fully expect my $6 back.... so I can give it to the crowdfunded SpaceX webcam.

There are quite a few restaurants on the south side of the bay, opposite where OCISLY berths. Presumably they would have power and internet connections available, and might be amenable to having a remotely operated webcam mounted on the roof for a small rental fee (and physical screening to block viewing of their own patrons). Building a PoE powered IP65 enclosure with a compact capture server (e.g. a NUC or STX board, or even a RasPi for a super-cheap build) and steerable webcam is not a big deal. Maybe with the additional carrot of hosting 'rocket return parties' for SpaceX fans who can make their way out to Florida. for the hopefully increasing regularity of stage returns.

As far as any port security rules. I think part of any donation effort should be made to consult with legal counsel regarding operating a streaming webcam. My gut (Note: I am not a lawyer so this is just my opinion) tells me that you just can't outright say "Don't film this" unless the area is a military base. However, we should have a lawyer look into the matter to make sure we have the proper response if they try to say otherwise. Especially if any prior rulings made in court on the topic can be found.

I am pretty sure that more than 50% of the viewers were viewing from their awful website, and I think that the evil hackers were not causing a big lost of revenue compared to what they were earning with their coverage of the event. Even though I had the ability to remove their ads, since the first watching, I have never done it. The stupidity of people never earning enough money is so annoying ! :(

THANK YOU! Huge respect for adopting this stance and for such a detailed, well-argumented and still very clear post. After hearing and seeing the CENSORED site's latest move, I was hoping for something like this. We'd better donate to a pro photographer to get a freakin' bus ticket or buy extra gas to get there and give us tiny bits of high-res information even if setting up a webcam isn't possible.
Personally, I never received a malicious redirect (possibly due to using Linux?) and I find it strange that they seem to think private tabs block their ad revenue if it displays ads. This, together with the poor design and (at the very least) childish and disrespectful responses lately shows they don't deserve any of that revenue. And now they won't any more.
Imagine all sites complaining about "losing ad revenue" to ad blockers and stopping providing their service which attracts a big chunk of their users. Open a fraking Patreon account and see how many people directly invest into your content...

I would be happy to chip in for a web cam if that option proves to be viable.
I'm also not at all surprised by the doxxing, unfortunately. As if the facebook group needed any more reason to dislike us...

As new and interesting as watching the port is now, by the 10th landing it will be a bit stale. I'd rather a timelapse of the Boca Chica development.

Damn, what a shitstorm. Thanks for putting it all together in comprehensible manner.
Was in process of ordering their "premium" service, then something grabbed my attention, forgot about it and went to sleep. Well, guess my bucks will go to our crowdsourcing campaign instead, would it happen.

I too have had a run-in with them. As a web developer, I criticize their use of a pay wall for their working website. They promptly blocked me on social media.
Their response was as follows
Sorry Zach but we don't appreciate commentary that questions our motives, strategy or implementation without the facts or insights to do either.
The existence of out Premium service has got nothing to do with responsive design. It is all about paying for the bandwidth... either by ads on our free-to-view websites or by subscription/ticket on our ad-free Premium service.
We are offering more choice.
Something and/or someone has to pay. Simple. End of story.
I will unblock your twitter account but please keep your commentary/remarks to our content ... not our technology or lack thereof in your eyes.
I hope /u/echologic agrees that that's just bullshit.

Acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, contractions, and other phrases which expand to something larger, that I've seen in this thread:
Fewer Letters More Letters
ITAR (US) International Traffic in Arms Regulations
NSF NasaSpaceFlight forum
National Science Foundation
OCISLY Of Course I Still Love You, Atlantic landing barge ship

I was following this whole mess over breakfast shaking my head. I've never been a very commercially minded person but have been taught to take care of your customers if you want to run a business. This whole thing is just silly. Thank you for the level headed summary.

God all mighty, welcome to the internet. If you can't get your shit together, people will find ways around it. Maybe come up with a decent website and business plan before lashing out at people who have no ill intentions!
EDIT: also, "hundreds of thousands of dollars" invested in a few webcams and an ad-laden website? I don't even know how you'd get to such numbers.

In the spirit of getting ahead in the game, anyone thought about setting up a Camera for West Coast recovery attempts yet?

While we are at it, we could point a camera at the pad itself for watching static firings.

Elon seems like the type of bro that would not only find this lack of competition and malware-based commercialism so repulsive he would condemn it, but hire a buddy and give him a few dozen mil to start an identical company that undercuts their prices by 10-20x. Is it just me, or is this not Elon's MO? I have to believe the size of this subreddit is a significant PR concern for his company.

Guys i'm pretty sure that /u/bencredible could help us setup a cool livestream, that even SpaceXers at McGregor could watch. Maybe even with a T+ timer and everything :) Mods can you talk to him and have some insights about what SpaceX thinks about all this?

In all honesty, it is not up to BenCredible to do this. He has already provided us with awesome feeds, listened to our input, ... I don't think we should annoy him anymore with requests.
It's sad how he pretty much left here because we kept bothering him.

I agree. Just because /u/bencredible shows his face around here every now and then, doesn't mean we need to harass him with every idea the community has. He does a bloody good job with the livestreams of launches and we should be thankful for that, and he has asked for our input in the past, but I think the sub has been given that inch and tried to take a mile.

What are the sorts of rules out there about interfering with a camera's fields of view? That is to say, what's to stop a peeved spacexer from standing near the peer with a mirror? What's to stop these fellows from doing the same to a crowd-sourced camera?

I'm not sure about the US, but interfering with radio transmissions is generally illegal but probably not in the terahertz band.

Well PTZ is based in California, plus it would be located on private property, and you would need a really big mirror if you're far from the camera which is completely impractical.

I don't understand why you'd ask a question like this. This isn't the way to solve any concerns. Regardless, the restaurant that hosts the camera would probably ask you to leave their property.
Don't be a dick.
